Who is Ham?

Before Armstrong, before Aldrin, there was Ham. A three-year-old pioneer who made history on January 31, 1961, when he blasted off aboard Mercury-Redstone 2 to become the first great ape in space.

Strapped into a capsule and hurtling at 5,000 mph, Ham didn't just survive—he performed. He proved that high-stakes tasks were possible in zero-G, even when his cabin partially lost pressure mid-flight.

His mission was the ultimate proof of concept, clearing the path for Alan Shepard and the future of human space exploration. Ham retired a global hero, leaving an untouchable legacy in the stars.

The First Astrochimp

Ham's Mission

1959 – The Chosen One

Selected from Cameroon for his intelligence and calm under pressure, Ham was brought to Holloman Air Force Base to begin the most rigorous training program on Earth.

1960 – Mastering the Controls

Ham was trained to operate complex levers in response to light signals, proving he could function under extreme G-forces and simulated space conditions.

January 31, 1961 – Ignition

Ham blasted off from Cape Canaveral, reaching 157 miles above Earth. He experienced 6.6 minutes of total weightlessness during his historic 16-minute flight.

1961 – The Hero Returns

Ham splashed down in the Atlantic, suffering only a bruised nose. He returned an international legend and the undisputed face of the Space Race.

Ham's Legacy

Ham wasn't just a test subject—he was a veteran. At an age where most chimpanzees are still nursing, he faced G-forces and isolation that would break most men. He performed flawlessly, showing a brand of courage that paved the way for every astronaut who followed.

He didn't just survive the mission; he conquered it. Ham spent his later years as a global icon, living at the National Zoo before retiring to the North Carolina Zoo. He passed away in 1983, a pioneer forever etched into the stars.

"They have bravely served their country. They are heroes and veterans." — Dr. Carole Noon, Save the Chimps

Ham's mission continues. Save the Chimps provides permanent sanctuary for the survivors and descendants of the space program. Honor the pioneer.
